Signed a New Contract with ANA for its SAF Flight Initiative

Nov. 10, 2022
News Release

Kintetsu World Express ("KWE") is pleased to announce that we have signed a contract with All Nippon Airways ("ANA") under the SAF Flight Initiative, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the industrial value chain through the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel ("SAF").

SAF refers to fuel that produces lower CO₂ emissions throughout its entire life-cycle—from extraction to refinement and use—by approximately 80% compared to conventional aviation fuel.

From October 2022 to March 2023, KWE has pledged to reduce as much as 1,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions with ANA-operated flights powered by SAF. Following third-party certification of CO₂ emissions reductions based on historical data, KWE intends to reduce Scope 3 emissions under the GHG Protocol, a greenhouse gas emissions reporting standard.

“For our light-asset business model, measures to reduce Scope 3 emissions are quite limited. Among them, use of SAF is the most effective and substantial measure at this moment. Decarbonizing our society is one of our material topics. We will continue to contribute to the realization of a low-carbon society through various initiatives”
states Nobutoshi Torii, President and Chief Executive Officer of KWE.

“We are very proud to have this new agreement with KWE, a leading freight forwarder, as a major step in our “SAF Flight Initiative”. Our continuous partnership is essential to expand the use of SAF which is important to maintain and develop our global network as well as decarbonization of the society”
states Shinichi Inoue, President and Chief Executive Officer of ANA.

To inaugurate the SAF Flight Initiative, KWE and ANA launched the first SAF-based cargo flight from Tokyo-Narita to Frankfurt in September 2021. Since then, we have increased efforts to discuss and collaborate on a comprehensive and ongoing SAF program. We hope to further reduce direct emissions (Scope 1) and indirect emissions (Scope 3) as we expand the fight against global warming and take collective action against climate change.
