KWE Concludes Tripartite Agreement with ANA and Kyocera Corporation to Reduce CO₂ Emissions through the Use of SAF

Jul. 9, 2024
News Release

Kintetsu World Express, Inc. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; KWE) is pleased to announce that it has concluded a tripartite agreement with All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; ANA) and Kyocera Corporation (Fushimi-ku, Kyoto; Kyocera) regarding "SAF Flight Initiative: For the Next Generation" cargo program provided by ANA.

SAF Flight Initiative

In 2021, KWE joined ANA's "SAF Flight Initiative: For the Next Generation" program as a launch customer. This program aims to visualize and reduce indirect CO₂ emissions in the industrial value chain through air cargo transportation using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Since then, we have been continuously working to reduce our Scope 3 emissions, the largest greenhouse gas emission in our supply chain, by purchasing SAF's environmental attributes. At the same time, we have had discussions with ANA and related stakeholders to explore ways to share SAF's environmental attributes with our customers.

As a result, an independent third-party certification organization has evaluated the validity of the CO₂ emission reduction certificate issuance process, making it possible for ANA to issue certificates under the joint names of KWE and the customer.
The certificates are to be issued by ANA to shipper companies that use our consolidation service on ANA flights, after calculating their emissions based on actual usage and allocating SAF (environmental attributes) required for reduction. With the certificates, customers can report their Scope 3 emissions reductions in their CDP responses, reports to SBTi, etc.
We are pleased to welcome Kyocera Corporation aboard this program as the first shipper company.

Recently and finally, interest in SAF has been growing in Japan toward the realization of Green Transformation. KWE will continue to focus on efforts such as this to promote the spread of SAF and indirectly contribute to the production and supply of SAF in Japan towards the realization of a decarbonized society.
