KWE Holds Used Cooking Oil Collection Event to Promote SAF
400 Participants at Hanazono Rugby Stadium
Kintetsu World Express, Inc. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo) held a PR event on Saturday, March 28, in collaboration with Kintetsu Group Holdings Co., Ltd. and the rugby team HANAZONO KINTETSU LINERS, aimed at raising awareness of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through used cooking oil collection.
The event was held in conjunction with a home official match for the HANAZONO KINTETSU LINERS against the NIPPON STEEL KAMAISHI SEAWAVES at Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Higashiosaka City. We set up a booth at the HANAZONO KINTETSU LINERS’ Hanazono Happy Park event, where, in addition to collecting used cooking oil, we provided explanations about SAF and conducted quizzes to encourage the rugby spectators to better understand SAF and cooperate with future used cooking oil collection efforts. Thanks to our prior calls for cooperation in used cooking oil collection via the HANAZONO KINTETSU LINERS website and social media, as well as on the large video screen at Hanazono Rugby Stadium, approximately 400 people visited our booth, and we collected about 34 liters of used cooking oil. The collected oil is planned to be used for the production of SAF at a plant in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture.
Since 2023, we have been participating in the Fry to Fly Project, an initiative aimed at realizing a decarbonized society through domestic resource recycling. In Japan, approximately 100,000 tons of used cooking oil are generated annually from households, and approximately 400,000 tons from restaurants and other food service establishments*. Most of the used cooking oil generated by restaurants and other food service establishments is recycled primarily for animal feed or industrial use. On the other hand, most used cooking oil from households is discarded without being recycled, posing a challenge for securing SAF feedstock in Japan.
As an air freight forwarder supporting global logistics, we are involved in promoting SAF and recycling resources, including through local events such as this, to help make the logistics industry more sustainable and combat climate change.
