Catastrophic Blow: Closure of Port of Baltimore Sparks Disruptions, Traffic Diversion

Mar. 26, 2024
Customer Advisory

March 26, 2024 — Earlier today, the Dali, a Maersk-chartered vessel exiting the Port of Baltimore, struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge causing a partial collapse of the structure. The vessel was carrying 4,679 TEU en route to Sri Lanka. Initial investigations by federal and local authorities have indicated that the collision is believed to be accidental.

The port is currently closed to inbound and outbound marine traffic. However, truck operations at terminals inside the port will continue. Search-and-rescue operations for victims and survivors in the Patapsco River are ongoing. No further information on the restoration of port activity is available currently.

Impact on Freight Operations

The Maryland Transportation Authority has cautioned against the use of Interstate 695 (Baltimore Loop on the east). Alternate truck routes are encouraged with note to height and width restrictions: Interstate 895; Interstate 95; or Interstate 695 on the west side of Baltimore for hazardous cargo. Marine traffic diversions are likely to involve the Port of Virginia and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Immediate Actions and Advisory

KWE is coordinating with authorities and carriers to assess operational impact on affected shipments to minimize disruptions and maintain continuity. Customers with concerns, please contact customer support or your sales representative for further assistance.

We will continue to provide updates as the situation develops. Thank you for your trust and patience.
