Canadian Rail Union and Employers Resume Collective Bargaining

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) announced today that it will resume collective bargaining discussions with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) on May 17, 2024, with the assistance of federal mediators. These negotiations aim to establish new agreements for Train and Engine (T&E) and Rail Traffic Controller (RCTC) employees.
CPKC reiterated its commitment to the collective bargaining process, emphasizing the importance of reaching agreements beneficial to employees, customers, and the broader economy. The Federal Minister of Labour's referral to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has introduced uncertainty regarding potential work stoppages.
Key Developments:
- Stakeholder submissions, including those from CPKC and TCRC, must be submitted by May 21, 2024, with responses due by May 31, 2024.
- No legal strike or lockout can occur until the (CIRB) has rendered a decision and a 72-hour notice has been issued.
- If no agreement is reached, a legal strike or lockout is unlikely within the next 60 days based on past instances.
