Global Technology Outage: Impact on Supply Chain Operations

Early today, Microsoft experienced a widespread outage affecting multiple services, including Windows systems and cloud services due to a defective update from its vendor CrowdStrike, a software security platform firm. This disruption has had a ripple effect across various industries, including logistics and supply chain management.

Impact on Supply Chain Operations

  1. Our Systems: At this time, KWE systems have remained unaffected.
  2. Ports and Terminals: Ports and terminals worldwide reported issues due to the outage. Operations were disrupted as critical systems used for managing freight and cargo were temporarily unavailable. The situation has raised concerns about potential delays and congestion, but North American terminals and ports were reported to be back online.
  3. Airlines: Global airlines also experienced disruptions. Systems responsible for booking, scheduling, and cargo tracking faced intermittent issues, leading to delays in air freight operations.
  4. Railroads: BNSF operations were not affected. Union Pacific has been impacted and have switched to manual operations, causing additional delays on the rail.
  5. Other Supply Chain Operators: Various other supply chain operators reported disruptions in their IT infrastructure. This has caused delays in processing and communication, impacting the overall efficiency of supply chain networks.

KWE aims to keep you informed with the latest updates to this situation. We are closely monitoring circumstances and coordinating with affected ports, airlines, and other partners to minimize delays and disruptions as we implement contingency plans to ensure the continuity of our services and mitigate the impact on your supply chain.
