Montreal Dockworkers Issue 72-Hour Strike Notice Starting Sept. 30

Sep. 27, 2024
Customer Advisory

The Montreal Longshoremen's Union, CUPE Local 375, has filed a 72-hour strike notice affecting the Viau and Maisonneuve container terminals at the Port of Montreal. The strike is set to begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 30th, and will last until 6:59 a.m. on Thursday, October 3rd. During this period, mooring services and cargo handling at the Termont terminals (Maisonneuve and Viau) will be suspended, prohibiting all rail, vessel, and truck services.

This action, however, is limited to these two terminals, and other terminals at the Port of Montreal will remain operational. The Montreal Port Authority has encouraged customers to stay updated by consulting the websites of terminal operators for detailed information on their services.

While negotiations between the union and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA), representing terminal operators and shipping companies at the Port of Montreal, continue, the strike marks a significant escalation as both parties seek to resolve a long-standing contract dispute. This strike follows a strike mandate approved by the union earlier this month, with a strong vote in favor, reflecting widespread worker dissatisfaction with contract negotiations that have been ongoing since January 2024.

Key Points:

  • Strike Notice: Filed for Viau and Maisonneuve terminals from September 30 (7 a.m.) to October 3 (6:59 a.m.).
  • Affected Operations: All services—rail, vessel, and truck—at these terminals will be halted.
  • Other Terminals: Will continue to operate normally during the strike.
  • Negotiations: Ongoing between the union and MEA to avoid further disruptions.

KWE will continue to provide timely updates and support to ensure the continuity of your cargo operations. For further assistance, please contact your KWE representative.
