ILA Port Strike Ends, Operations Resume at East and Gulf Coast Ports

On October 3, 2024, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) reached a tentative agreement, officially ending the recent strike that impacted major East and Gulf Coast ports. According to the joint statement issued by both parties, all current job actions will cease, and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume.
The strike caused temporary disruptions to the flow of goods, leading to delays and rerouting of shipments. While operations are set to resume, some delays may persist as ports work through backlogs.
The expired contract will be extended through January 15, 2025, as the final details of the new agreement are worked out. The deal will need to be ratified by the union members. However, if the members vote against it, there is a possibility the strike could resume.
Key Points:
- Operations Resume: East and Gulf Coast ports are resuming operations, though backlogs may cause minor delays.
- Contract Extension: The expired contract is extended through January 15, 2025, as final details are negotiated.
- Strike Risk: If the tentative agreement is rejected by union members, the strike could restart.
