Ottawa Intervenes to Resume Port Operations and End Labor Dispute

Nov. 12, 2024
Customer Advisory

On November 12, 2024, the Canadian federal government took decisive action to end labor strikes at key ports in British Columbia and Montreal by ordering binding arbitration.

Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon directed the Canada Industrial Relations Board to implement this step, following stalled negotiations and a recent lockout of approximately 1,200 longshore workers at Montreal's port. The mandate for binding arbitration aims to restart port operations within days, aiming to prevent further disruptions to Canada’s economy and supply chains by ensuring the continued movement of essential goods.

KWE will continue to provide timely updates and support to ensure the continuity of your cargo operations. For further assistance, please contact your KWE representative.
