Customer Advisory: Supply Chain Impact Following Myanmar Earthquake

Apr. 1, 2025
Customer Advisory

On March 28, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, with aftershocks affecting several neighboring countries, including Thailand and Laos. While no significant or long-term disruption to international logistics networks has been reported, Kintetsu World Express is closely monitoring regional impacts and potential delays.

Key Updates:

  • Thailand:
In Bangkok, transportation services such as BTS and MRT were temporarily suspended following the quake. A high-rise construction site collapsed, resulting in multiple casualties. KWE Thailand facilities remain operational, with only minor cosmetic damage observed. Airport customs and cargo operations have resumed normal service, although staffing shortages may cause localized delays.
  • Myanmar:
Our local contacts have reported no disruption to operations. However, northern and central areas, including Mandalay, have suffered infrastructure damage, which may affect domestic logistics and inland transportation.
  • Laos:
No damages have been reported by KWE’s local agents in Vientiane and Savannakhet. Cross-border operations with Thailand are continuing without interruption.
  • Air Freight Delays:
    • Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK): Approximately 47% of outbound flights have been delayed, with average delays of 45 minutes.
    • Don Mueang International Airport (DMK): Up to 46% of flights are experiencing delays, averaging 68 minutes, with no cancellations reported.
    • Additional minor delays have been reported at airports across Southeast Asia, including Da Nang, Surabaya, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur.

While the overall impact on freight movement remains limited, KWE advises customers to anticipate potential delays—particularly for cargo transiting through Bangkok or affected domestic regions in Myanmar. As always, we recommend working closely with your KWE representative to review shipping routes, schedules, and contingency options.

For further assistance or questions about your shipments, please contact your local KWE representative.
