Customer Advisory: U.S. Compliance Alert
U.S. Compliance Alert: Avoid Delays – Font Size Requirements for Dangerous Goods Markings
To comply with 49 CFR §172.301 (U.S. DOT) and Section 7.1.4.4 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, all packages containing hazardous materials must be marked with the Proper Shipping Name and Identification Number (preceded by “UN,” “NA,” or “ID”) using the correct font size.
Required Font Sizes:
- All standard packages, salvage, and overpacks: Identification numbers must be in characters at least 12 mm (0.47 inches) high.
- Packages with a maximum capacity of 30 liters (8 gal) or less; 30 kg (66 lbs) maximum net mass; or cylinders with a water capacity of 60 liters (16 gal) or less: Characters must be at least 6 mm (0.24 inches) high.
- Packages with a maximum capacity of 5 liters (1.32 gal) or less, or 5 kg (11 lbs) maximum net mass: Font size must be proportionate to the package size.
Accurate markings are critical for safety and compliance. Incorrect font sizes can cause delays, carrier rejections, or violations. Verify all markings before shipping.
