Aperture & Focus 2025: Week 13

Global Aperture
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization (CADO), a nonprofit based in Montreal, to independently manage the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry launching in April 2025. The registry will support global decarbonization efforts and track SAF transactions across the aviation industry.
The Gemini Alliance—a vessel-sharing partnership between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd—has seen overall schedule reliability fall below its 90% target. Recent weekly averages have ranged between 83% and 87% since the network launched in February 2025. While transpacific arrivals to the U.S. remain above the target percentage, other trade lanes have shown greater variability.
Regional Focus
Americas
Canada: On March 23rd, severe weather disrupted operations at Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, and Montreal-Trudeau airports, resulting in hundreds of flight delays and cancellations across domestic and international routes. Strong winds and heavy rain impacted airline schedules, and while airports are working to resume normal operations, delays and service interruptions may persist as carriers manage backlogs.
United States: Following the temporary delay of 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico to April 2nd, there has been a surge in USMCA certification requests from U.S. businesses seeking duty-free treatment under the trade agreement. Many of these requests come from small importers and cross-border businesses that had previously avoided certification due to the complexity of meeting requirements. This rush has the potential to impact cross-border trade with short-term delays and disruptions.
Asia-Pacific
China: Ezhou Huahu (EHU) International Airport, Asia’s first all-cargo hub, has opened 38 international freight routes in its first year of operation, connecting 42 destinations across five continents. On March 6, SF Airlines launched a new route linking Ezhou with Bangalore, India, further expanding trade and logistics ties between the two regions.
Thailand: The Forum of Dry Ports Operators, Logistics, and Multimodal Transport Service Providers will be held in Bangkok and online from March 26–27th. Organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the forum aims to strengthen regional cooperation by promoting sustainable transport solutions, policy alignment, and operational coordination among dry port stakeholders across Asia-Pacific.
Europe, Middle East & Africa
France: A nationwide strike at French ports, initially scheduled for March 18th, was suspended after a meeting between government officials, unions, and port industry representatives regarding ongoing pension reform disputes. While operations have resumed, the union may restart industrial action pending the results of the most recent negotiations.
United Kingdom: Cargo operations at Heathrow Airport (LHR) have resumed following a full-day shutdown on March 21st caused by a fire at an off-site power substation. While services were back to normal by March 24th, cargo handlers are still working through potential shipment backlogs and delays due to rerouted freight and capacity constraints at alternate airports.
